The applet above displays Jupiter and the four main satellites (Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto) in realtime. The image presented is one that closely resembles the low-power field of a telescope or binoculars. The distances of the satellites from Jupiter are in proportion to that of the real Jovian system. The left-to-right order of the satellites are given by the satellite names displayed in the lower left box. Satellites names in red indicate that the satellite is being occulted (behind) by Jupiter. Satellite names in yellow represent transiting satellites. Clicking on the image of Jupiter or any of the satellite images will take you to the appropriate page at the Nine Planets site. Both of these applets were created by Gary Nugent.

Here are some Jovian junctures:

Discovery of the Galilean Satellites
Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9
